SV High students take on Engineering Day challenge

Susquehanna Valley High School was well-represented at the annual Broome-Tioga BOCES Engineering Day event Monday, November 7.

Three SV High teams joined their peers from area schools to engage in some friendly competition. Their task: take a box of what appears to be random, unrelated items and use them to create a fully-functional Rube Goldberg-type machine within two hours. This is about as hands-on as you can get, as the team members strategize and try out engineering ideas, making modifications along the way until the box full of assorted items has been transformed into a machine. This gives the students a chance to stretch their academic muscles in science and math, and helps them learn interpersonal skills, including time management and teamwork.

Judges from Raymond Corporation, Lockheed-Martin and BAE roamed the BOCES Education Center gymnasium to watch the students work. Winning groups received medals and maybe some bragging rights.  PHOTOS HERE.
