RTS students build skills at Engineering Day

Richard T. Stank Middle School fielded no fewer than five teams in the friendly competition that is Engineering Day at Broome-Tioga BOCES. The Glenwood Road campus's gymnasium was transformed into a hybird workshop and laboratory Tuesday, November 8 as teams accepted the challenge to build a Rube Goldberg machine out of a box of randomly selected everyday items. RTS students competed against their peers from a number of other area school districts to complete their task in two hours or less, while being judged by folks from Raymond Corporation, BAE and Lockheed Martin. As students quickly found, it's not always easy to take a collection of items most of us would find in that junk drawer we all have somewhere in our homes and somehow fit them together to perform an actual machine function. But that's the challenge - and RTS students performed admirably. PHOTOS HERE.
