Proposed 2022-2023 Susquehanna Valley CSD Budget

A Look at the May 17, 2022 Ballot:
When you enter the voting booth Tuesday, May 17, 2022:
  • You will be asked to look at a spending plan for the 2022-23 school year. As usual this includes a $100,000 small Capital Project which will be the continuing replacement of windows and doors at the High School.
  • You will be asked to fill three seats on the Susquehanna Valley Board of Education. These seats are currently held by Ryan Remza, Suzanne Vimislik, and the remainder of the term of Robert Strick (via resignation). Candidate bios can be found below.
  • You will be asked to consider a bus purchase proposition. You will vote on a measure authorizing the District to purchase four (4) 66-passenger buses, including incidental equipment, expenses, and preliminary costs at an aggregated maximum estimated cost of $520,000 to be repaid over five years through bonds.

    The Cost of Vehicle Acquisition
If the voters approve the bus purchase proposition, the total amount of the borrowing, including interest, is estimated to be $559,000 over five (5) years at 2.50% interest. State transportation aid will cover 87.1% of the cost of the buses, or $486,889, over five years. As part of the District’s ongoing bus replacement plan, it is not anticipated the purchase will increase the tax levy.

2022-2023 Candidates for the Susquehanna Valley Board of Education

Johanna Burkhardt
My name is Johanna Burkhardt and I am announcing my candidacy for the Susquehanna Valley School Board.

As a graduate of Susquehanna Valley, I have always had a great sense of pride for our district. This made the decision easy for my husband Tom and me to settle in Conklin to raise our 4 children, Drew (9th grade), Lauren (8th grade), Sam (6th grade), and Ryan (4th grade). Following their education through the years has given me the opportunity to witness rigorous academics, strong athletic opportunities, many diverse clubs, and the fine music programs that our district has to offer. Susquehanna Valley truly is a great place to live and learn!

I am a graduate of SUNY Cortland, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Masters Degree in Literacy Education. Currently, I am in my 19th year teaching 4th grade in the Maine Endwell School District. As an educator, I have been fortunate to work with wonderful students, engaged parents, supportive colleagues and administrators, and invested community members. These experiences have given me an understanding of curriculum, how children learn, relationship building, and most importantly, what is best for all students. I believe the experiences I have had during my career will help me to be a dedicated, open-minded, collaborative member of the Susquehanna Valley School Board team.

Susquehanna Valley is an exceptional school community and if I am fortunate to be elected to a position on the board, I pledge to commit the time and energy to the role. Having all students’ best interests in mind is key to the success in any school organization. I would welcome an opportunity to be part of the district’s governance team to continue to offer the best educational experiences and learning environment for our children while being fiscally responsible.

Ryan Remza
My name is Ryan Remza and I live on Woodcrest Way in Conklin with my wife, Karee, my son, Xander (9th grade), my daugther, Quyn (7th grade), and my youngest daughter, Harper 2nd grade). I grew up on Leslie Avenue and have spent most of my life living in Conklin. I am a 1996 graduate of Susquehanna Valley and am beyond blessed by the guidance, opportunities, and the experiences I had while attending our schools.

I have spent my entire career in sales. A career in sales has taught me the importance of listening to the customer, negotiating, and finding a consensus that works for all parties involved. I am confident these skills and experiences will help me serve the community as an active school board member.

I’ve also spent time volunteering in the community. I am the committee chair of Troop 83 for BSA America (Boy Scouts). I’ve enjoyed serving the community as a coach with the Conklin Youth Sports program. I’ve had the pleasure of coaching soccer, baseball, basketball, and softball. My experiences volunteering are important to me as I want to provide service to our kids like the many that did the same for me as a child growing up in the town.

After 3 years of serving the community on the board of education with perfect attendance and full participation in all meetings I am looking forward to serving our community further by bringing a perspective from the private sector to help continue to move our school district in the positive direction we have been heading. If re-elected, I pledge to continue to serve through a lens of fiscal responsibility while continuing to pursue the absolute best for our children in the Susquehanna Valley School District. Thank you for your consideration!

Suzanne Vimislik
I have been a member of the Board of Education at Susquehanna Valley for the past 15 years and President of the Board for 2 of those years. A seat on the Board carries with it a large personal commitment in time, energy, and leadership and I believe that I have accomplished all of these.

My husband and I both grew up in the district and both graduated from Susquehanna Valley High School before attending and graduating college. I am a retired Speech and Language Pathologist, having worked at BOCES for 36 years. My husband is currently an employee of Universal Instruments in Conklin. Our two sons, Jay and Jeffrey also both graduated from SV and went on to study at New York State Colleges and Universities.

I believe that I have learned a great deal while serving on the SV Board of Education. I have attended many workshops and meetings that were designed to strengthen and expand my knowledge of specific areas of discussion and concern such as; budget, policy, common core issues, and New York State educational policies and finance. I serve on four Board committees: legislative, health consortium, audit, and the Superintendent’s evaluation committee.

Our district and our students will continue to be challenged financially and meeting continually changing educational needs and policies. I think my experience on the Board and as an educator for special education gives me insight into working on the Board in a very positive way. Each year presents the Board with the challenge of balancing our students’ needs and our fiscal responsibility to our residents.

I hope you will vote for me in order to benefit from this knowledge and continue to move our district forward in these rapidly changing times. Thank you.
