Sabers Shine at BOCES Engineering Day
1st and 2nd place, Middle School Engineers and 3rd place, High School Engineers. All in a day's work for teams from Susquehanna Valley, who participated in BOCES Engineering Day. Teams of students from fourteen area school districts competed to use everyday materials to create Rube Goldberg-style machines. The teams had no idea what materials they'd be provided until the start of the competition and had three hours to build their machines.

The project requires students to put their academic and interpersonal skills to the test, using science and math training along with time management and teamwork.  Richard T. Stank Middle School technology teachers Kurt Rezucha and Quentin Taylor accompanied the teams to the competition and proudly witnessed their victory in the friendly competition.

In the Middle School Engineers division:
First place, with a score of 136: the team of Andrew Decker, Tyler Wing, Nathaniel Franklin and Dan Martone.
Second place, with a score of 132 (pictured above): the team of Elijah Miller, Thomas Ricci, Tim Stank and Drew Garrehy.

In the High School Engineers division:
Third place, with a score of 152:  the team of Richard Diffendorf, Jordyn Layton, Alison Reifler and Jack Dyson.

Engineering Day is coordinated by Broome-Tioga BOCES, SUNY-Broome, and the Eastern Southern Tier STEM Hub. It relies on the assistance of many volunteers, including SUNY-Broome students who help with judging, and teachers from B-T BOCES who assist in setting up, organizing and distributing materials and cleaning up after the competition.
