Proportion portraits prove the power of Guided Instruction

Portrait project

What a difference five classes of guided instruction can make. In their portrait unit, Mrs. Decker’s 5th graders at Brookside Elementary demonstrated the effectiveness of guided instruction by drawing two self portraits a few classes apart. First, the students were asked to look into a mirror for 20 minutes and draw a self portrait with no instruction.  Then, following five classes of guided instruction, where students learned about the proportionate relationships between shapes, spaces, sizes and angles, students sat in front of the mirror for their second self portrait. The progress they made is obvious!  Look for these self portraits in the annual Art Show at Brookside on Tuesday, May 29.
