HELP YOUR CHILD TO ACHIEVE
 (AND WIN PRIZES, TOO!)

Dear Parents/Guardians of Elementary Students,

Your child is invited to take part in a reading program sponsored by the Susquehanna Valley Library Department. We will be offering rewards to students who participate.

Many studies have shown that students can lose reading skills over the two-month summer break. Some parents spend large sums to enroll their children into special summer courses to prevent this “summer slide.” But one of the very best things you can do to prevent reading loss is FREE. What is it? Simply have your child:

R E A D 20 Minutes Every Day!

Daily reading not only helps students to retain what they have learned over the school year; it has so many other benefits as well including an increased vocabulary and better writing skills. Reading for twenty minutes a day translates to smarter students and higher academic performance.

More information about the "SV Resolves to Read" Summer Reading Program can be found below.

Sincerely,
SV Librarians & Library Clerks

"Program Guidelines"

1. Set a summer reading goal. We recommend that all students aim for at least 20 minutes a day. Check with your teacher to see if they think you could do even more!

2.  Record your reading goal on the calendar that was sent home with your child. Use the calendar to keep track of your reading minutes. (Hold on to this; it will be your entry form in September)

3. It is okay for younger students to meet their goal by having someone read to them.
