SV up for the challenge at BOCES Engineering Day
students work at engineering day
There was no shortage of SV Sabers brain power on display when Broome-Tioga BOCES hosted an expanded Engineering Day event at its Glenwood Road, Binghamton campus.

On Monday, November 7, Susquehanna Valley High School sent three teams to what has now become a three-day event, competing with their peers from other area schools to turn a box filled with random objects into a functioning machine.

This competition challenges students to take a box of what appears to be random, unrelated items and use them to create a fully-functional Rube Goldberg-type machine within two hours. This is about as hands-on as you can get, as the team members strategized and tried out their engineering ideas, making modifications along the way until the box full of assorted items had been transformed into a machine. The competition gives students a chance to stretch their academic muscles in science and math, and helps them learn interpersonal skills, including time management and teamwork. SV High students participating: Devante Rivera, Mamnun Ahmed, Jordan Starchok, Jamison Steen, Mya Lewis, Acaydian Salisbury, Payton Bleil, Tyler Buchetto, Jonathan Dieppa, Zachary Fedorwich, Carmine Frantellizzi, and Remy Mangan.

Judges from Raymond Corporation, Lockheed-Martin and BAE roamed the BOCES Education Center gymnasium - transformed into a workshop/laboratory hybrid - to watch the students work. Winning groups received medals and maybe some bragging rights.

On day two, November 8, it was Richard T. Stank Middle School students' turn to head to BOCES, fielding five teams for the Engineering Day(s) challenge. Students participating from RTS: Myles Bahnuk, Amethyst Bogart, Sam Burkhardt, Candice Curtis, Evelyn Goittshall, Baileigh Green, David Hashey, Alaina Judy, Kealan Kinney, Ryan Lewis, Giano Lisi, Audrey Packer, Sarah Rozboril, Warren Schneider, Reese Seidel, Kayden Spencer, Anthony Storti, and Joey VanWert.

Teams from Brookside Elementary School and Francis P. Donnelly Elementary School competed on the third and final day, November 9. Brookside participants: Jonathan Bronikowski, Leland Darby, Joseph Arnold, Rylie Smith, Sadie Ross, David Passionino, Trevor Osterhout, Ama Reuter, Alexa Timm, and
Julian Lawrence. From F.P. Donnelly: Dominic Benning, Ziriah Button, Cooper Connors, Trenton Enslin, Hunter Gregory, Ryan Hashey, Calliope Ingraham, Olivia Ingraham, Zachary Killmeier, and Landon Petrus.
