SV's Crisman is all business at New Visions
Cassandra Crisman
Fourteen area high school students, enrolled in the Broome-Tioga BOCES New Visions Business Academy have spent just under three months getting a real world taste of what it's like to launch a new business from scratch and build it into a successful endeavor. Susquehanna Valley senior Cassandra "Cat" Crisman was one of key players in launching Ventureprize through their association with Junior Achievement and New Visions.

While, in technical terms, Ventureprize was a business simulation, in all respects it was as real world as it gets. Crisman and each of her peers had assigned roles in the company, for which they marketed and sold real products for real money. Crisman was on the Ventureprize Sales and Customer Service team, assigned to find leads and build the customer base. Their products: puzzle pictures that, when put together, formed an image from somewhere in Broome County, and an eight-pack of note cards featuring photos from around downtown Binghamton.

In just under three months, Ventureprize generated a net income of just under $6 thousand, the bulk of which was distributed in donations to a number of local charities. The students gave a group presentation about their company Wednesday, January 11 before a packed conference room at the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator, where they described each step in the process of creating their business before inviting representatives from charities such as CHOW, A Room to Heal, The Mental Health Association, and the Binghamton Rescue Mission to accept donations from Ventureprize proceeds.

Students in this year’s Broome-Tioga BOCES New Visions Business Academy attend the following home school districts: Binghamton, Maine-Endwell, Newark Valley, Johnson City, Windsor, Whitney Point, Susquehanna Valley and Vestal. The New Visions Business Academy focuses on the areas of finance, business management, marketing and human resources. Cassandra joined New Visions to help her discover which area of business to pursue. While she was Team Lead in Ventureprize's Sales and Customer Service department, she plans to major in marketing in college. Here at SV, in addition to getting great grades in her studies, she plays soccer and runs track, and is involved in Student Council and National Honor Society.
