Senior feels more prepared for college, thanks to New Visions
Addison Rosenkrans learned about Broome-Tioga BOCES New Visions program from friends who had participated in the past and heard nothing but good things about it. With an interest in working in the health field, she decided to enroll in the Health Careers Academy. Through this program that gives students in our region a realistic peek into a career they may be contemplating, she hoped to gain firsthand experience and an insider’s view of what it is like working in health care.

New Visions students spend mornings taking classes and working side-by-side with professionals in the community, observing and participating in real-world experiences.

Her favorite aspect of this program is how it prepares her for many different things. “It teaches you so many good qualities to have as you begin looking for colleges, programs and careers,” shared Addison.

Health Academy students complete 22 weeks of clinical rotations in area hospitals and community partner clinics and offices. Addison has enjoyed seeing what roles different health care providers play, and her favorite rotation so far has been in occupational therapy. “It allows me to interact with many different people and stay in the social environment I’d like to have for my future job,” said Addison.

Next up, she is heading for rotations in the emergency department, intensive care unit, operating room, ophthalmology, respiratory therapy, cardiac care, perioperative care, and chiropractic care.

What’s ahead for Addison? She plans to go to college and pursue a career in prosthetics and orthotics!

Other academies available to college-bound seniors looking for a realistic look into their chosen career field while also earning college credit include business, education, engineering, or law & government.

In addition to their real-world experiences, New Visions students receive their grade 12 English and social studies requirements through program coursework. The English class offered through SUNY Broome Fast Forward is College Writing I, with college credit awarded following successful completion of the course. Social studies coursework is divided into two semesters, and economics is completed in the first semester for high school credit. In the second semester, students take Public Policy, receiving credit for successful completion through the SUNY Broome Fast Forward program.

The application process for New Visions includes an essay, teacher and school counselor recommendations, and an interview. For more information about Broome-Tioga BOCES New Visions program, visit the New Visions web page.
