In March, a half dozen students at Richard T. Stank Middle School took a big step toward the National “You Be the Chemist” Challenge.

R T S sent seventeen students to Binghamton University Saturday, March 18 for the first round of competition:  Haley Wing, Madeline Olbrys, Karim Al-Khalidi, Joshua Stewart, Adrienne Vanderberg, Joey Mayglothling, Payton Gendron, Richard Diffendorf, Barbara Hill, Hailey Traver, Sean Bronson, Makenna DeMoney, Kellen Russell, Madeline Ulma, Kyle Coddington, Emily Trudell, Jacob Staff.

The You Be The Chemist Challenge, created by the Chemical Educational Foundation, is an interactive academic contest that encourages students in grades 5-8 to explore chemistry concepts and their real-world applications. The Challenge provides a unique opportunity for a variety of individuals and organizations—including schools, members of the chemical industry, educators, and other community partners—to come together and show their support for STEM education.

Based on their phenomenal performance at the regional competition at B U, six Richard T. Stank Middle School students moved on to the state competition April 29 in Tarrytown:
1. Joey Mayglothling
2. Emily Trudell
3. Payton Gendron
4. Karim Al-Khalidi

R T S You Be the Chemist advisers Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. Zietz made the journey downstate to cheer on our competitors. In Tarrytown, after three rounds of grueling questions, Barbara Hill, Emily Trudell and Haley Wing were eliminted. Joey Mayglothling was eliminated in the following round. Payton Gendron continued on to the next round and endured a single elimination question challenge, after which he secured a fifth place finish! We are very proud of all of those who participated.
