Smart play, Sabers!
It's not uncommon to hear a coach (or parent, or teacher....) use the expression "Use your head!" to motivate a young person to strive for progress and excellence. Apparently, a lot of Susquehanna Valley Sabers student-athletes have taken that advice to heart. They give literal meaning to the phrase "smart play!" Nine SV Sabers sports teams ended the fall season by being recognized for not only excelling on the field of play, but in the classroom as well.

At the end of each sports season, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) honors those teams and individuals that excel in the classroom. Those student-athletes, teams, and schools work very hard throughout the year and deserve to be recognized for their academic success.

To receive Scholar-Athlete team recognition with a certificate, the team's average GPA for 75% of the roster must be greater than or equal to 90.00. This means you take 75% of your roster and then average their GPAs. Any GPA can be included, but if it is below a 90, they will not receive a pin. If a team DOES NOT meet the Scholar-Athlete Team Criteria, the individuals on that team with a 90.00 or above GPA are still eligible to receive a pin and will be considered an Individual Scholar-Athlete.

During the 2022 fall season the following Susquehanna Valley Varsity teams earned Scholar Athlete Team Status; Girls Tennis (GPA 95.00), Boys Soccer (GPA 95.00), Girls Swim and Diving (GPA 94.70), Girls Soccer (GPA 93.72), Golf (GPA 93.61), Volleyball (GPA 93.34), Cross Country (GPA 92.99), Football (GPA 90.59), Cheerleading (GPA 90.55). On January 6, the SV Athletic Department and SV High School honored those teams and scholar athletes for this rare accomplishment with a short recognition ceremony in the high school auditorium. Athletic Director Ed Swartwout, Interim Principal Charles Hutchinson and Assistant Principal Zach Tarnowski handed out certificates and pins to the athletes who have distinguished themselves on the field and in the classroom.
