Community outreach takes SV High Student Council to Conklin Senior Housing

This year, Susquehanna Valley High School Student Council is expanding its reach outside of the high school building. "We want to encourage the students to use their education in proactive ways to impact the community," said Erica Lambrou, who - with co-advisor Sydelle Steward - arranged for these leaders of the SV High School student body to prepare and share a dinner for and with the residents at Conklin Senior Housing, Monday, February 6.

Student council officers: Vince Cooper (President), Holly Manchester (VP), Carter Gray (Secretary), and Lucas Davy (Treasurer) worked with SV Board of Education President Robert Strick and Conklin Senior Housing Manager Toni Strick to create a supply list.  Then, the students got to work, approaching local businesses who generously donated everything needed for a delicious spaghetti and meatballs dinner.

Donations included:
Cortese Restaurant - three varieties of pasta sauce
Weis Markets (Conklin Ave., Binghamton) - gift card to purchase pasta, soda, bread, pies
Price Chopper (Glenwood Ave., Binghamton) - paper products
Nirchi's (Conklin) - garlic knots
Music - Old Friends

"The students arrived after school around 3:30 p.m. to set up the facilities and begin cooking," said Ms. Lambrou. "Mr. Strick taught the students how to cook and prepare a variety of pasta sauces that included meatball and sausage, peppers and onions. Holly Manchester and Addie Buckley were assistant cooks. Jordan Bado, Carter Gray, and Sydney Lister served the food.  Kayla Burns and Olivia Parker served drinks.  Abigail Finch, Vince Cooper, and Evan Salisbury were servers for the guests.  Jason Osborne and Ilma Halilovic were hosts."

Joining the students and approximately 35 guest diners was Roland Doig, Superintendent of Schools. The guests listened to Old Friends play during their meals. Students delivered meals to residents that were unable to attend.  After their pasta course, guests enjoyed pies and coffee. The students stayed to clean up and do dishes.
