Even when the school day is only half as long as usual, you can still learn a LOT at RTS! That was certainly the case Friday, January 27 as the school, on an Early Dismissal day, welcomed teams of visitors from the Binghamton University Chemistry Department and the Kopernik Observatory.
RTS students spent the day rotating between hands-on (and safety goggles on!) chemistry lessons in the school cafeteria and creating light and sound (and hand waving) circuits in room 127. A group of B-U Chemistry students, led by Simon Tong and Rebecca Kissling, guided eager middle schoolers through a series of mini-labs:
1. Fingerprinting
2. Electroplating and fruit battery
3. Density of soda and colored salt solutions
4. UV beads and borax putty
5. Kinetic sand and hydrophobic sand
6. pH activities

In room 127 - the Distance Learning Room - Nicholas Guydosh and Tish Bresee from the Kopernik Observatory had students buzzing and beeping and lighting up and waving! They worked in pairs with Snap Circuits to literally create bells and whistles. PHOTOS HERE
