STEM careers in spotlight at R.T.S.

Richard T. Stank Middle School is fully on board in the mission to introduce young people - and particularly girls - to potential careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math - STEM. On September 19, students spent a good portion of their day immersed in STEM activities. One component they worked with: a computer program created by Google called Made with Code. The STEM effort has been adopted by the National Federation of Women Legislators, and New York State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo's office helped to set it up in our area. At Richard T. Stank Middle School, girls watched the movie, Hidden Figures, about the female mathematicians who played critical roles at NASA in the early years of the U.S. space program. After the movie, a representative from Lupardo's office, Chris Whalen, addressed the girls to talk a little about women in STEM careers.
The girls then spent time with coding activities from Google's site, Made with Code. They involved creating codes for music, fashion design, a Wonder Woman obstacle course, etc.  Each girl received a free pair of sunglasses from Google. PICTURES HERE.
