Math at Amusement Park
Submitted by Mrs. Merrell
On Friday, May 8, 2009, 44 students from Ms. McGrath’s and Mrs. Merrell’s Algebra II/Trig Classes attended Coaster Quest 2009 at Dorney Park in Allentown, PA. The students spent the morning collecting data that students will be using to answer Math B Regents related questions. Some of the activities that the students performed were:
· Determine the angle of elevation of the Ferris Wheel, using a gravity protractor, so that they could calculate the diameter of the Ferris Wheel;
· Using trigonometry, they estimated the length of the track of the first drop of the Steel Force;
· Using a grid system, students determine points on the track of the roller coaster Thunderhawk in order to find an equation that could be used represent the path of the roller coaster;
· They analyzed the speed of the riding in the first car of a roller coaster vs. riding in the last car of a roller coaster.

| SV's Wharton Picks Up More Well-Earned Recognition
On May 8, Senator Tom Libous and YES! Safe Choices for Kids were joined by local parents, teachers and school administrators to honor more than 500 Broome, Tioga and Chenango high school Peer Leaders at ADSIP’s (Alcohol and Drug Student Information Program) year end awards reception. Of those 500 Peer Leaders, three received the Jill Kavanagh Memorial Scholarship, including Susquehanna Valley High School Senior Morgan Wharton, who won a $2,000 Scholarship.
Morgan is a four year ADSIP member, competes in two varsity sports and is a National Merit Scholar. As President of Susquehanna Valley’s ADSIP chapter, Morgan led her group members to hold a gift drive for local needy families, created a program to babysit children so that parents could attend PTA meetings and doubled the chapter’s presentations to fifth and six grade students.
Morgan said of her ADSIP experience, “Being a Peer Leader helped me enhance my leadership skills to become a more complete leader in order to promote drug free activities and kids in my community. I consider the confidence I gained because of my experience in ADSIP an immeasurable gift that will benefit me in college.”
