Saber Stage Productions Presents "Up the Down Staircase"

The SV High School Drama Club - now known as Saber Stage Productions - had a great weekend run of Bel Kaufman's Up the Down Staircase". The play, by Christopher Sergel, is based upon Kaufman's 1965 novel by the same name. The play, set in fictional Calvin Coolidge High School in New York City, revolves around young, idealistic high school English teacher Sylvia Barrett, whose dream of fostering in her students a love for classic literature and writing runs head first into a number of troublesome roadblocks: petty bureaucracy, indifferent students and incompetent colleagues. She rethinks her frustration-fueled decision to leave public education after realizing how she has been touching the lives of her students. Critics have long hailed the play's ability to be simultaneously laugh-out-loud funny and painfully thought-provoking.
