At Brookside Elementary School, children LOVE pumpkins! They also love learning about geography. That inspired Mrs. Gaji to combine those two things into one fun learning experience!
Thursday, November 1 - the day after Halloween - Mrs. Gaji's 3rd graders spent the day turning pumpkins into globes. In preparation, students learned songs with lessons in latitude and longitude, continents and oceans. Using the songs as guides, students traced the continents on white pumpkins supplied by classroom aide Mrs. Woodruff. They then painted the continents green and labeled them, along with the oceans and the equator. To end the day, students read Chester the Worldly Pig, a story of a pig that toured the world because of peculiar markings on his back that were in the shape of the continents.
